COVID-hit Japan Tempts Tourists With Free Attractions269
Japan is rolling out the welcome mat for tourists with a new campaign offering free admission to some of its most popular attractions in a bid to revive its tourism industry, which has been battered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The "Japan Visitor On-Arrival Promotion Campaign" will provide free entry to over 2,000 attractions across the country, including iconic landmarks such as Tokyo Skytree, Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine, and Osaka Castle.
The campaign is part of a larger government effort to boost domestic and international tourism in the wake of the pandemic, which has caused a sharp decline in visitor numbers.
In 2019, Japan welcomed a record 31.88 million foreign tourists, but that number plummeted to just 4.11 million in 2020 due to travel restrictions and border closures.
The free admission campaign is expected to attract a significant number of tourists, who will be able to take advantage of the savings to experience some of Japan's most iconic attractions.
To participate in the campaign, tourists must present their passport and a valid visa at the participating attraction. The campaign is valid for a limited time only, so tourists are advised to check the official website for details.
The free admission campaign is just one of a number of initiatives that Japan is implementing to boost tourism. The government is also providing subsidies to travel companies and airlines, and is promoting domestic travel through a number of campaigns.
Japan is hoping that the free admission campaign will help to revive its tourism industry and encourage more people to visit the country. Here are some of the participating attractions:
* Tokyo: Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea, Ghibli Museum, TeamLab Borderless
* Kyoto: Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Gion District
* Osaka: Osaka Castle, Universal Studios Japan, Dotonbori, Kuromon Ichiba Market
* Other: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, Naoshima Art Island, Hakone Open-Air Museum, Jigokudani Monkey Park
Note: The free admission campaign is valid from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
