China Day 12: Exploring the Ancient Wonders of Pingyao & a Taste of Shanxi Cuisine349

Today marks day twelve of our incredible journey through China, and we’re trading the bustling cityscapes for the tranquil charm of Pingyao, a UNESCO World Heritage site nestled in the heart of Shanxi province. Prepare yourselves for a day steeped in history, architectural marvels, and some truly delicious culinary experiences.

Our journey began early this morning with a high-speed train ride from Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi. The train journey itself was a treat, offering breathtaking views of the sprawling countryside as we zipped across the plains. The train arrived on schedule in Pingyao, and from there, we easily hailed a taxi to our charmingly rustic guesthouse located just outside the ancient city walls.

Pingyao's ancient city walls are its crowning glory, a remarkably well-preserved testament to China's rich history. Imagine walking along these imposing walls, built centuries ago, with the sun gently warming your face. The walls completely encircle the city, creating a sense of being transported back in time. We spent a good couple of hours exploring the entire perimeter, pausing at various points to take in the stunning panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscape. The best part? Relatively few tourists! Compared to some of the more popular destinations we've visited, Pingyao offered a welcome sense of tranquility and allowed for more immersive exploration.

After our walk along the walls, we ventured inside the ancient city, a maze of narrow, cobbled streets lined with traditional courtyard houses, each telling its own unique story. Many of these houses have been meticulously restored, now serving as shops, restaurants, or guesthouses. The architecture is breathtaking; the intricate details of the wooden carvings and the ornate brickwork are simply stunning. We spent a significant amount of time wandering these streets, getting delightfully lost and discovering hidden alleyways and charming courtyards. One of the highlights of our exploration was the Rishengchang Exchange Shop, a former bank that played a crucial role in the development of China's financial system during the Qing Dynasty. Stepping inside this historical landmark felt like stepping back in time, allowing us to appreciate the ingenuity and sophistication of China's ancient banking practices. The preserved architecture and exhibits provided a fascinating glimpse into the economic history of the region.

Lunch today was a culinary adventure in itself. We stumbled upon a local eatery tucked away in a quiet alleyway, a place where the locals ate. We opted for a traditional Shanxi meal, a feast for the senses. We sampled potsticker dumplings, succulent and juicy, served with a tangy vinegar sauce. Then, we moved on to knife-shaved noodles, a truly impressive feat of culinary skill, the noodles being shaved directly into the boiling broth right before our eyes. The noodles were served with a variety of flavorful toppings, including vegetables and meat. The highlight, however, was the Shanxi hand-pulled noodles, incredibly long and elastic strands of dough, pulled and stretched with remarkable dexterity by the chef. This was a true culinary experience, showcasing the richness and diversity of Shanxi cuisine.

After lunch, we visited the Pingyao County Museum, which offered a comprehensive overview of the city's history and cultural heritage. The exhibits, though largely in Chinese, were visually rich and provided a valuable context to our explorations. From ancient artifacts to documents detailing the city's historical significance, the museum offered a deeper understanding of Pingyao's place within the broader tapestry of Chinese civilization.

As the afternoon sun began to cast long shadows across the ancient city, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through one of Pingyao's many well-preserved temples. The serenity of these temples, with their intricate carvings and tranquil courtyards, offered a perfect contrast to the bustle of the day. The quiet contemplation within these sacred spaces provided a truly restorative experience, a moment of peace amidst the rich cultural immersion.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves sitting on a quiet rooftop overlooking the ancient city walls, illuminated by the warm glow of the setting sun. The sight was truly breathtaking, a perfect ending to a day filled with historical discoveries, architectural marvels, and unforgettable culinary experiences.
