My initial expectation of China, fueled by countless documentaries and films, was a land of ancient mysteries and bustling modernity existing in a fascinating, sometimes jarring, juxtaposition. And I wasn't disappointed. The sheer scale of everything – the cities, the historical sites, the sheer number of people – was immediately striking. Coming from the quaint charm of rural France, the sheer energy of a Chinese metropolis was initially overwhelming, but quickly captivating.

The Great Wall, naturally, was a must-see. The photos don't do it justice. The vastness, the history etched into every crumbling brick, the sheer effort involved in its construction – it's humbling. However, the crowds were something else. While I expected them, the sheer density of tourists, particularly at popular sections, occasionally detracted from the meditative experience I'd hoped for. Finding a quiet spot to truly appreciate the majesty of the Wall required a bit of strategic planning and a willingness to venture further off the beaten path.

The Forbidden City, another iconic landmark, offered a different kind of experience. The intricate architecture, the sheer size of the complex, the palpable weight of history – all of it was breathtaking. The meticulously preserved buildings, the ornate details, and the sheer scope of the imperial past were incredibly impressive. What struck me, however, was the organization. The flow of tourists was surprisingly efficient, minimizing congestion and allowing for a relatively serene experience, especially compared to the Great Wall.

My journey also took me to the stunning landscapes of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the inspiration for the floating mountains in Avatar. The sheer scale and beauty of the sandstone pillars, shrouded in mist and rising dramatically from the valleys, was truly awe-inspiring. Hiking through the park was physically challenging but immensely rewarding. The air was crisp and clean, and the sense of isolation, despite the presence of other visitors, was palpable. This was a welcome contrast to the densely populated cities.

Beyond the well-known landmarks, I was also fascinated by the lesser-known gems I discovered. The ancient canals of Suzhou, with their tranquil waters and charming bridges, offered a peaceful respite from the urban frenzy. The intricate gardens, a testament to Chinese landscaping artistry, were a delight to explore. The peaceful atmosphere and the meticulous detail in every aspect of the gardens created a truly immersive experience.

One thing that continually struck me was the difference in tourist behaviour compared to what I’m used to in Europe. In China, there's a much greater emphasis on group tours, often with large groups moving in coordinated formations. While this can sometimes lead to crowding, it also creates a unique atmosphere, a sort of collective experience shared by hundreds, even thousands of people simultaneously.

The food, of course, was a highlight. From the spicy Sichuan dishes to the delicate Cantonese cuisine, the diversity and quality of Chinese food were consistently impressive. Exploring local markets and street food stalls was an adventure in itself, a sensory explosion of colours, smells, and tastes. However, for a Frenchman accustomed to more refined dining experiences, navigating the sometimes chaotic nature of street food required a bit of adventurous spirit!

The cultural differences were also fascinating. While many Chinese people I encountered spoke English, the language barrier occasionally presented challenges. However, the warmth and hospitality I received more than made up for any communication difficulties. The willingness of strangers to help, even with limited language skills, was a testament to the generosity of the Chinese people.

One aspect that surprised me was the prevalence of tourist traps. While many sites were authentic and breathtaking, I encountered a few places that felt overly commercialized or staged for tourists. This wasn't unique to China, of course, but it was something to be aware of. Independent research and a willingness to explore beyond the most heavily marketed attractions were key to a truly rewarding experience.

In conclusion, my journey across China's tourist sites was a transformative experience. The scale, the history, the diversity, and the sheer energy of the country were overwhelming at times, but ultimately unforgettable. While the crowds and occasional tourist traps were minor drawbacks, they were far outweighed by the breathtaking beauty, the rich culture, and the remarkable hospitality of the Chinese people.
