Ningde‘s National Day Celebration: Unveiling Hidden Gems & Iconic Landmarks28

The National Day holiday in China is a time for celebration, family reunions, and, of course, travel! This year, I decided to explore the lesser-known, yet incredibly beautiful, region of Ningde in Fujian Province. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours, Ningde boasts a stunning array of landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and delicious cuisine, making it the perfect destination for a memorable National Day getaway. This post will guide you through some of the must-see spots I discovered, perfect for exploring during this festive period.

My Ningde adventure began in the bustling city of Ningde City, the prefectural capital. While not a traditional tourist hotspot, the city offers a glimpse into authentic Chinese life. I highly recommend strolling through the local markets, brimming with fresh produce, seafood, and local delicacies. Don’t be afraid to venture beyond the main streets; you'll discover hidden gems like charming tea houses and traditional craft workshops, perfect for experiencing the local culture and picking up unique souvenirs. The city also has several well-maintained parks, ideal for a relaxing evening stroll after a day of exploring.

Next on my itinerary was the stunning Baima Mountain (白马山). This mountain range is a hiker's paradise, offering breathtaking views and diverse flora and fauna. I spent a day trekking through the lush forests, enjoying the crisp mountain air and the tranquil atmosphere. The numerous hiking trails cater to various fitness levels, making it accessible to both experienced hikers and beginners. For those seeking a less strenuous experience, there are also scenic viewpoints accessible by car, allowing you to soak in the magnificent panoramas without breaking a sweat. The stunning sunrise from the peak is a sight I'll never forget.

From the mountains, I journeyed to the coast, exploring the picturesque Xiapu (霞浦) county. Famous for its stunning coastal scenery, Xiapu is a photographer's dream. The unique interplay of light and shadow on the vast expanse of the ocean creates breathtaking images. The best time to visit is during sunrise and sunset, when the colours paint the sky in vibrant hues. I spent hours exploring the various fishing villages and coastal areas, capturing the beauty of the ocean and the hardworking fishermen going about their daily lives. The seaweed farms stretching out into the water are a particularly striking sight.

Another highlight of my trip was Yanjiawan (盐家湾), a charming coastal village known for its unique rock formations and peaceful atmosphere. The village feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. I spent a relaxing afternoon exploring the rocky coastline, watching the waves crash against the shore, and simply soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings. It's the perfect place to unwind and escape the stresses of daily life.

Beyond the natural beauty, Ningde also offers a rich cultural experience. I visited several ancient temples and historical sites, learning about the region's fascinating past. The local cuisine is another highlight, with fresh seafood dishes being a must-try. From the simple yet delicious noodle soups to the more elaborate seafood platters, every meal was a delightful culinary adventure. Don’t miss the opportunity to try some of the local specialties – you won't be disappointed!

My National Day trip to Ningde was an unforgettable experience. It proved that you don't need to travel to the most well-known tourist destinations to have an amazing holiday. Ningde's hidden gems, coupled with its rich culture and delicious food, made it the perfect destination for a memorable celebration. If you're looking for a unique and rewarding travel experience this National Day, I highly recommend adding Ningde to your list. You won't regret it!
